Corn Sugar – Don’t Let The Name Fool You…Too Much Will Still Make You Fat

Have you seen the new "Corn Sugar" commercials by the Corn Refinery Association?  If you haven't seen them yet, you're in for quite a treat.  No pun intended.  Last year the consumption of High Fructose Corn Syrup had fallen to a 20 year low.  Good news for us, bad news for them.  So, to eliminate what they call "confusion" among consumers, they're launching a full out assault on our intelligence.  This is a perfect case of the wolf dressing up in grandmas clothing.  Hmmmm, maybe if we call it something else, they won't connect all the bad press associated with HFCS and buy our processed crap anyway.

My hope is that we're smarter than that.  I'll give them this. HFCS is a sugar and although I used to believe that it's far worse than regular old cane sugar, it is pretty much the same thing.  Even though it's been created in a lab and our bodies don't really know what the heck to do with this stuff, chemically it's still made up of fructose and glucose as is sucrose (table sugar) which is also glucose and fructose.

Although it's fun to blame the big bad wolf for our fat issues, we really should be cutting down on ALL types of sugar.  Old fashioned sugar treats and even excessive fruit will make you fat too. And the biggest problem regarding HFCS and Fructose containing sugars is how the sugars are metabolized and what they do to our bodies.

Because High Fructose Corn Syrup and Fructose containing sugars are broken down in the liver.  Too much can cause things like, insulin resistance, leptin resistance, lesions on the liver or fatty liver disease, diabetes, heart disease, cancer and many other degenerative conditions.

So next time you start counting calories, please DON'T.  A calorie isn't just a calorie.  It's all about balance and eating real food.  If your great, great grandma wouldn't recognize what you're putting in your mouth, maybe you should skip it?
