Do you know what your basal or resting body temperature is? Chances are, if it's too low (below 98.6) it might mean your body's just not running on all cylinders.
Here's the scoop. I've read articles in the past dealing with body temp and thyroid function, namely stuff inspired by the famous Doc Broda Barnes . If you haven't heard of Broda Barnes, he was way ahead of his time 50 years ago when he revealed that basal temperature was a good indicator of thyroid activity. In his book about thyroid function he talks about symptoms and problems that occur from low (hypo) thyroid activity and how basal temperature is a better indicator of what's going on than the levels of the thyroid hormones in the blood.
Then the other day as I was listening to Sean Croxton's, Underground Wellness blog talk radio podcast titled "Boost Your Metabolism" some really bright light bulbs started going off in my brain. His guest was Matt Stone. If you haven't heard of Matt, you've gotta check out his site http://180degreehealth.com. And no, he's not the "South Park" Matt Stone or some well known Beverly Hills plastic surgeon or Celebrity Trainer, he's just an excellent writer who's also a health and nutrition geek out to get to the bottom of our modern day ills like obesity, heart disease, cancer and all the other degenerative diseases that are consistently on the rise. I really like Matt's (Sean's too) non-dogmatic, realistic approach to solving our modern day health challenges.
Did the light bulb go off in your head yet? If not, think for a sec. The thyroid gland is one of the king pins in metabolism. If your thyroid's not up to snuff, you're probably not processing your food efficiently either. Of course the fat loss thing isn't that simple. If it were, we wouldn't have a huge problem on our hands, but what Sean and Matt did discuss on the show really calls for a closer look. Shortly after I finished listening to the show, I fired up my net book went to his site and downloaded his "FREE" e-book 180 Degree Health. And as Sean said in the interview, this isn't just your average run of the mill, put you to sleep e-book either. It's captivating, entertaining and most of all informative. This guys done his research. As a result, I'm conducting yet another science experiment on myself as I continue to heal my poor worn our adrenal glands.
I'll fill you in on my progress and what I'm doing on the next post, but in the mean time take your waking temp (either oral or armpit) for the next 3 days and take an average. I did oral, didn't want to stick the thermometer I use in my mouth in my pit. Then download Matt's book here http://180degreehealth.com and let me know what you get out of it in the comment section.
